"An Invite to a Meeting ~Simply Put, I Just Want to Be Popular~" is the third episode of the Mob Psycho 100 anime adaptation.
Synopsis[]
It is great for Mob that he joined the Body Improvement Club, but he suddenly faints while running along the riverside. His wish is to get stronger and to be able to get closer to his beloved Tsubomi. One day, as Mob is feeling troubled, a woman with a strange mask approaches him... Summary[]
Mob starts training with the Body Improvement Club, but collapses easily. The Telepathy Club has been allowed to stay in the room as the Body Improvement Club only needed it to store their equipment. Musashi Goda brings the collapsed Mob in and asks them to look after him. As he wakes up, he explains he joined that club as he wanted to improve himself, making Tome Kurata realize he is trying to become popular, but tells him he won't be able to. Mob demonstrates his power, and Tome starts asking him to help her out, looking for extraterrestrials with telepathy, but Mob declines, saying he has other things to do. He goes to Arataka, who realizes Mob is troubled with love and tells him it is understandable as even he wants to be popular.
Going home, a woman stops Mob and starts guessing why he looks sad and eventually guesses that it's about love and tells him he can become popular if he goes with her. Hearing that, Mob agrees and goes to a secret religious meeting (LOL). He is brought to the scene, where he meets a classmate, Ichi Mezato. The cult leader Dimple shows up, making everyone laugh, and explains that he wants to make everyone laugh and be happy. He makes one of the people on the scene put masks on Mob and another man. Ichi thinks this religion is suspicious and reveals herself to be from Salt Middle School newspaper, and thinks that he is using some hypnosis to brainwash people. But as Dimple removes the man's mask, he starts laughing, making Ichi wonder how it is possible. Ichi wants to leave, but Dimple doesn't let her go and puts a mask on her, making her start smiling and laughing.
Meanwhile, Mob has also put on a mask, but it doesn't affect him, and he wants to leave. Dimple tries to convince him to stay and, in the end, challenges him to a milk-drinking content with the (LOL) leader, and whoever laughs first loses. Loving milk, Mob accepts, but all three leaders fail and laugh, making Dimple realize it because he was making them laugh. He then challenges Mob, but puts something in the milk, making Mob spit it out. Dimple says he laughed, but Mob denies it, and annoyed, releases psychic energy releasing everyone from the hypnosis, but Dimple manages to reapply it quickly. Dimple tries to use his psychic powers on Mob, but it still has no effect, and Mob explains that even if he wanted to, he couldn't laugh. Dimple then mocks him because he has no emotions; because of that, he won't be able to enjoy a laugh with the one he loves or cry with her, and he will be forever alone. Realizing Mob has psychic powers, Dimple decides to get rid of him, making Mob comment that he is glad he isn't a good person, but an evil spirit. Dimple commands his people to stop Mob, and having kept his emotions back for so long; they have risen to make him reach 100%, which releases his rage. Dimple reveals himself and attacks Mob, but none of his attacks have any effect, and he is easily defeated by Mob.
Mob later explains what happened to Arataka and regrets that he made a whole group of people stop having fun. Still, Arataka explains that only Mob could save them due to being hyperdense and unable to laugh. At the (LOL) meeting, people start to return to normal and think that Mob may be the faithful messenger of God. In the morning, Mob wakes up to find a weakened Dimple greeting him in his room.
