For Oneself is the fourth chapter of the Mob Psycho 100 manga series.
Synopsis[]
Inukawa brings Mob to join the Telepathy Club. The club's president, Tome, tells Mob that the student council's vice president Tokugawa is threatening to disband their club if they don't find a one more person to join them. She also tells how in Salt Middle School it's forbidden to participate in two or more clubs simultaneously, and no one else has been interested to join, so Mob is their last hope. Despite this Mob refuses, which leads to Tome being surprised and Inukawa asking uneasily if Mob has other reasons to why he doesn't want to join. Mob answers in affirmative as he has to get going.
They try to still get him to join, telling him he only needs to fill some forms, to which Mob answers that he really doesn't have any time. They accuse him of lying to them and ask him what he really is up to. Mob calmly answers that the meeting with the exorcism client is half past 4, to which Tome answers in confusion. She is asking is Mob exorcising ghosts or something, but then Inukawa tells her how Mob used to be quite famous back in elementary school. He could bend spoons and use his eraser without touching it, and also Mob didn't react when he touched the lighter's fire. Inukawa also tells her that Mob can see ghosts. In other words, he is a psychic.
Tome ignores all that new information, telling Mob to skip the nonsense and join their club already. Mob asks Tome to wait as he is only an assistant in the process, so he has to ask his master first. Mob then calls Reigen. Tome realizes that this may be a bit more serious than she initially thought and offhandedly asks Mob if he is sure that he isn't being scammed by a fraudster. She also mentions that the vice president (Tokugawa) can show up at any moment.
Reigen answers the phone. Mob asks if it's alright if he shows up late and tells him that a certain club's members want him to join and fill some forms first. Reigen tells Mob that he can fill the forms in a sec, but Mob tells Reigen that in their school the student council goes on until 4:30 and the applications have to be handed in person so he has to wait till then. Reigen is asking him if he can't just tell them that he needs him immediately and not join them, to which Mob does admit that he did promise him first. Reigen then realizes that Mob may not even want to join them, which Mob also confirms. Reigen then finally tells Mob to come to work.
Mob then says he will be on his way, but Tome isn't having any of it. She snatches the phone from Mob and starts speaking to Reigen. He realizes that it's a girl who is speaking. Tome is telling their club's possible fate to Reigen, that she wants Kageyama to join, no matter what. Reigen first tells her that Mob is really bad at sports so they can't force him to do it. Tome tells him that they are not a sports club, and Reigen then is asking are they an art or brass band club. She finally tells him they are called a telepathy club, who are training in order to receive telepathy. Reigen thinks it's garbage as he doesn't think telepathy is a thing.
Tome is then furious about what Reigen said so she starts to accuse Reigen of using Mob for his powers and fame. Reigen then tells her that only handful of people really knows about Mob's powers so he really isn't that famous. He also mentions that Mob is still his disciple, and there is nothing wrong for a master to have his disciple by his side. Tome then starts to cry on the phone and asks Reigen if he is fine that they disband their club and chase them out of their club room. Mob sees this and gets his phone back so he asks Reigen if it would be better for him to join them first as she is crying. Reigen then tells him to not believe her crocodile tears and assures him that even if they do get disbanded they can still organize their own meetings. Tome, clearly acting like she is crying, peeks at Mob and watches him.
Reigen then says that the "bond", "memories" and "friendship" do not disappear when their club disbands, but what they really are clinging to are the "club budget" and "club room", and that they would only be munching on their snacks and chitchat in their club room after school. He then tells Mob to open his eyes and see that they are not what they pretend to be. Reigen points out that if he helps them, he will only help them to waste the budget and the club room. In the end of the call Reigen tells Mob that if he understands he should then come to finish the weakened spirit.
As Mob ends the call, Inukawa wishes for him to listen what he has to say to him as he overheard their conversation. He tells that he thinks that Tome really believes the telepathy stuff, but admits that he himself only is in the club for the snacks bought with the budget, and likes reading the manga in the air conditioned room, which he likes. He also justifies this by telling Mob there is nothing wrong in what they are doing. That people their age should be allowed to slack off and Mob should definitely join them. Inukawa then asks him what he gains by helping out a psychic to which Mob mentions he earns 300 yen per hour. Inukawa in bewilderment thinks the salary is too small, even for a middle school student, and that Mob is definitely being used.
Inukawa and the others then try to get him to join by bombarding him with comments about the club and how they can all just to chill together, and how it's better for Mob to stay away from Reigen. It stops when someone knocks their door. Kijibayashi and Saruta recognizes it as student council's vice president Togukawa's knock and informs everyone about it. Tome is a bit surprised that he already is there.
Tokugawa tells them that he had to arrive there early so he can tell about the usage of the room to the Body Improvement Club which is going to replace the Telepathy Club. The members of the Body Improvement Club is then first shown as they stand next to the vice president. Tokugawa also tells how they are now going to use this room starting from today. Tome stops him by telling him that Kageyama has yet to decide if he joins, so they can't take the room yet. Togukawa is surprised by this, so he asks Mob various questions regarding interests, friends and preferences, to which he answers in the negative. Togukawa is then wondering what Mob wants, because if he isn't interested about anything or about the Telepathy Club and joins in only because the other members dragged him into it, what would he gain from it. He also points out that if Mob joined their club not because he is interested he will become not only a "ghost member" but a real "ghost", and is wondering then doesn't Mob himself have any opinions. Togukawa in the end tells Mob that if he didn't want to join the Telepathy Club he should just say no, but if he really wants to then he doesn't stop him.
While the Telepathy Club members are nervous about what Mob's decision is, Mob himself ruminates what he wants for himself. It takes some time of thinking before Mob remembers his dream: to confess to his first love, Tsubomi. There is then a flashback scene to when Mob and Tsubomi were little kids. Mob wanted her attention so he would always show his powers to her, until one day when Mob was levitating a dog in the air, she then told him she had already seen enough of that. She wasn't impressed anymore. Mob was a bit sad about it. Tsubomi would be more interested in fast running boys than psychic powers, which lead to Mob not showing his powers anymore as he lost confidence in the one thing he was special at.
Mob then decides, that maybe it would change if he joined the club! The Telepathy Club are already ready to welcome him in, when Mob tells the Body Improvement Club that he wants to join their club. They welcome him. Mob's explosion meter is then revealed to be 40%.
Afterwards[]
It's revealed that Mob has yet to appear to the client meeting with Reigen, which he notes. The rather unattractive client introduces himself as Inoue and tells Reigen that he thinks he is being possessed by an evil spirit. Reigen then asks Inoue what is his symptoms and the client simply tells that he has never had a girlfriend so it has to be the doing of an evil spirit. Reigen confirms that it's the evil spirit and then tells him to take the seat so he can start the "exorcism".
He first fixes Inoue's hair and eyebrows as those "can hide spirits". He applies pressure to the client's neck and face to ease the circulation of lymph to "push out the spirit", and lastly uses some "exorcising wax" and "holy water with an odor" to "repel evil spirits". When Reigen is finished he tells they are now done and he can now try to get a girlfriend, revealing that the client's looks have become attractive thanks to Reigen's ministration.
